Help! Please correct me if this is wrong. So, all silicone is cohesive, right? Even though if it's a gummy bear implant or the more liquidy kind-it's all cohesive? What exactly happens if the more liquidy silicone implant busts? Anything? I'll have them placed under the muscle if it matters. I'm having my surgery done a lot sooner than I expected as my consult was on the 9th, pre-op is on the 16th, and surgery on the 25th! All this after I waited over 1.5 months for the consult so now I am really scrambling for info! I'll ask my PS these questions at the pre-op but I wanted to get an idea beforehand whether I was going with saline or silicone so all I would have to worry about at the pre-op is the cc amount. I just really don't know whether to go with saline or silicone! So far, silicone sounds great to me! *From what I've read,* there is less rippling with silicone, feels more natural, lasts longer than saline, and implanted ladies with saline are saying that when they get a redo, they are getting silicone rather than saline, which makes me want to get silicone in the first place if they didn't want to get saline again at their redo. The only thing that is holding me back about getting silicone is the supposed health risks with silicone. Yes, I am willingly implanting a foreign object in my body so there IS a risk. Saline seems like the lesser of two evils though with silicone just recently being available again after being banned. Anyone had a bad experience with silicone, wouldn't recommend it for some reason, know someone that didn't like it, or preferred saline after having silicone? Can you tell I am Type A or what?!? On top of all this, from the impression that I got at my consult, my PS doesn't seem all that crazy about silicone. Said I didn't need it. I'd really appreciate any experiences, information, or links. Feel free to email me too!

I am not any help really just wanted you to know that I am sort of struggling with this too. I went on 2 consults last friday and both the DR's told me saline did not offer reasons as to why that and not silicone, maybe after the anchor lift I will need I will still have enough breast tissue? I have read that the silicone is good for people with little breast tissue. I am soooo confussed about it all too. and I need to either go forward to get over it so to speak. I am just hating second guessing myself NOW that I am sooo close, but I am a mom to 3 little girls and am having struggles doing this "elective" thing and dying or messing my body up with all the resposibilities of a wife and mom too! Sorry not much help more just letting you know that I feel the same!! Good luck to you Katie |

Even if you get saline implants the implant shell is still silicone. The difference is the filling. When a saline implant bursts your body absorbs the saline slowly (provided it's not contaminated in which case you're in a lot of trouble!). When a normal co-gel implant bursts some silicone might leak outside of the implant but it will stay within the boundaries of that breast and implant pocket. When a gummy bear implant ruptures, nothing happens. No silicone leaks outside of the implant. On the old silicone implants back in the 70s, if they ruptured you might've had silicone around your spine for example as it entered the blood stream and migrated. That's what caused the health problems, not just silicone as such. |

What brand of implants will you be getting? Mentor and Inamed (Allergan) both have lots of info in regards to silicone on their respective websites. In fact I was reading over Inamed's yesterday evening. |

I don't know. My pre-op is on Tuesday. I believe my PS uses Mentor. I guess more than anything, I'm still worried about a rupture with silicone but it seems alright? Ugh, I hate this. I'm an RN and it doesn't help that I had a patient yesterday status post cardiac/respiratory arrest on the table after going to Mexico for plastic surgery so now, I'm even more nervous! http://www.mentorcorp.com/breastsurg...comaprison.htm

I don't know if it helps you to know, pretty much all the implants done in the UK (from what I've heard) are silicone co-gels. I wasn't even offered saline at my consult, and a lot of UK girls I've spoken to have said the same. My PS only uses silicone. I believe it's a similar situation across Europe too... very rarely will you be given saline. Don't know why. But hopefully it'll put your mind to rest a little that silicone is used extensively across Europe and the UK and as far as I know has been for years...

i have silicone too and like practically everyone else in europe was not even offered saline. if its any consolation we have 1 or 2 ladies in here who have actually driven over silicone implants with their car and the implants did not rupture natually the implant was some kind of sample - not in the boobie |

the others gave so much helpfull info that i wont drivel on very much about this even though it is my second fav topic. jfyi sillicone was not actually banned but for a time it wasent licenced in the usa inless used as part of a study. and whilst yes there are risks with every thing my personal oppinun is that the illnesses assoicated with sillicone are just a way of trying to control women, you never here these concerns when men get testicular implants and these are identical to breast implants only smaller |

When I saw my PS June of 2005 he suggested if I wasn't in a hurry to wait for the silicone to pass. So I waited 18 long months and am so happy I did. They are pretty soft for just one week post op. I really trusted my PS and have known him for years...there are a lot of studies you can read to help ease your concern. I have Mentor and on their site you will find lots of information...

This is a topic of concern for me too. My aunt got really sick from silicone. They have come so far from what they used to be though. I am still too scared of silicone, so I am going with saline, but my PS prefers silicone and basically everyone that has silicone loves it. I am just chicken, so that's why I am not going with it. They are supposed to be pretty safe these days.
