![]() | Back again...silicone vs. saline???
uhhh...i am still going back and forth on getting saline or silicone. Of course i like the feel of silicone and i am a perfect candidate for it because i am only 95lbs and barley an A cup. (i actually have some breast tissue despite my petite size) But, I don't like the fact that they just got approved here back in the u.s. and that i should get MRI's every few years. That is exspensive!!! But, i don't want to have a ton of rippling with saline. I know i will probably get some and do not mind a little. I am only going to go 275cc-300cc to get a full B/small C. What do you ladies think? I think i would feel more comfortable with saline, but do you think i can get good results??? oh, i am of course getting unders and the PS i am going to did not say i should not necessarily get saline, he just suggested silicone and that i not go to big.

I am also 95 lbs. and had an A/small B cup to begin with, I got salines and I have yet to feel any ripples (cross my fingers). I love the way the feel. I'm happy with my decision, and if I had to do it again I would still go with saline and forgo any added risk/hassle with silicone, but that's just me. Hope this helps.

PS's can not tell if the new cohesive gels rupture since they stay in form and don't go leak anywhere. the only way they can tell if it ruptures is by doing the MRI. My PS said that I would have to go every 2 years... just in case. Even though they believe that silicone is safe, if it ruptures they would want to replace it. i went to my consultation this week set on saline and now i have decided on the cohesive's.

I don't know if it's different state to state here in the U.S. My PS told me, if I went with silicone, I would have to sign an agreement to have an MRI every two years, at my own expense, most likely, since insurance isn't going to cover a procedure connected to elective surgery. Now whether this was a legally binding agreement, I don't know. Maybe it's just to cover the PS's a**, in case of problems. I intended to go with saline all along, so I didn't really research the silicone agreement. Certainly would have made me think twice, tho', if I'd been at all interested in the silicone. Annie p.s. so far, I am happy with saline, but it's only been 8 days. |

Okay, this is totally just MY opinion, and I only just adopted this opinion a couple of days ago: saline. I had originally thought I wanted silicone...in fact I was dead set that was what I wanted. I met with one PS that said he wouldn't use sils, and I decided not to choose based on that. The next PS I met, Dr. Miller, would be willing to do sils, but he does not like them. He told me that silicone, IF it ruptures, though it won't travel through the body, it will get into the surrounding tissue and "destroy the breast". He said if an implant ruptures it must be removed. He said every time he has removed silicone implants he has removed due to rupture or leakage, and he also has to remove breast and muscle tissue. Even that didn't convince me, though. What made me change my mind to saline was when he said he has a daughter, and he would not recommend silicone implants to her, for the fact that IF it were to rupture or leak, her breasts would be destroyed. Then there are the MRIs...not cheap. I can't believe I'm saying all this because last week I was sure silicone was the way to go. But, for me, it isn't. And I'm pretty tiny, too. Having said all that, it is so very much your choice. And a personal one at that. If you like your PS, if he recommends them, and you feel comfy with that, then go for it!! It's all up to you! Good luck in choosing! Follow your gut! |

Wow - I've been reading some scarey stuff. I have silicone, because my PS likes them. Said they feel much more real than saline and he didn't feel there were any more complications than with Saline. So I guess it depends entirely on the views of the PS. I will tell you being a nurse, you can get several physicians to consult on any patient in the hospital, and they never agree with each other. My PS didn't say that I have to have MRIs every two years. He didn't say anything about it at all. I would think the MRI and Mammos would be arranged by your family physician or OB/GYN doctor. I think some MDs are very paranoid about being sued, and so are overly cautious. The consent I had to sign was about 12 pages long! The consents at the hospital I work, for serious surgeries are 1 to 2 pages long. All in all, I think that the FDA wouldn't have approved silicone if all the scarey things were true - or at least frequently true. They have studied silicone implants for many years and followed many women. The percent of complications for saline or silicone is still quite low. So, I agree that this is a personal decision that only you can make. Just do your research and you will figure it out. Good luck to you. mousiet breast augmentation 11/29/06 Pre breast augmentation 38b - Post breast augmentation - natural looking C-D. |

Hello, I have my pre-op on Tuesday and I'm also struggling with this decision. My PS was leanng towards sils but I don't know what to do. It is true about the MRI's and originally I thought that was a bad idea but they can detect so many things with it that it's been making me think that that fact is beneficial. The whole point for me to do this is to look and feel great naked with my BF. If he feels water moving and ripples, I'm going to be self-consious about that instead of being small. I want them to feel natural like I'm sure you do too. Good luck and keep me posted. Bridget |

Wow, that is scary about silicones leaking and having to get muscle and tissue removed. I am on the fence about silicone or saline too. My good friend has saline, is very thin and says she has no rippling no matter what position she is in. But, the silicone gels do feel better in the hands. My PS said that the gels do not necessarily feel better in the body though. So hard to decide.

How much does MRI cost ??? Im in Uk and it was never mentioned to me...but we get free mammograms at age 50+ I was told to just carry on with breast examinations in the normal way as if they had always been my boobs...then i had to go to our local doc cos i found a lump, and she said exactly the same, treat them as if you grew them yourself..

Hi, I'm getting my breast augmentation with silicones next month, I went to a senimar with Kaiser about breast implants & breast augmentation's in general & the new Mentor Silicone Gel Filled Breast implants, it was extremely useful & answers all of you questions. It covered the totally history of breast implants, and the REAL facts behind all of the horror stories. First things first Silicone implants have never been banned in Europe, only in the USA, they have been used on millions of women and in Europe so surely this alone is the best proven research out there. Yes, I will have to go for regular check ups every couple of years - but not Mgm's, they will only do this if they see reason to, and I prefer to be checked out every couple of years I would even if I was having saline. I think like it has been said on this thread unfortunately some ps don't have the confidence to work with silicone in the USA at the moment due to law suits etc, but if a Kaiser are keen to use them and are confident then that must say something as they have a huge reputation at stake. I hope this helps, but most of all YOU need to be confident with the implants you choose, good luck ! |

THanks for all your help ladies!!! I am not postive what i will go with, but all this advice definetly helps me in my decision. For today, i think i am going to go with Saline since many of you have said you have had decent results with it, and it is what i am most comfortable with. But, silicone is still not out of the question. we will see!!! my pre-op is Feb. 27th!!!

![]() | MRIs and implants
I just had a thought......No matter which implants you choose - saline or silicone - they show up as opaque white on a mammogram. If your PS thinks you need to have MRIs to see abnormalities, then you need to have it if you have saline or silicone. The only difference would be an MRI to check for rupture. I am not an expert by any means, but I bet it is highly unlikely for the cohesive gels to rupture. And remember, the saline implants are surrounded by silicone. So why would one be more dangerous than the other. I think the studies have also shown that Silicone did not cause all those mysterious diseases some women sued over. Just my 2 cents......
