Tylenol & surgery??

My PS told me that I should avoid tylenol, advil, etc for a while before surgery..my question is: how long?!? I get chronic migraines and the ONLY thing that helps thats non-prescription is Excedrin Migraine. And I've been fighting this headache alllll day and I haven't taken it cuz I'm afraid. and let me just say OUCH. my eyeball feels like it's on fire. WHY do we have to do this?? I've had 14 surgeries in my lifetime (car accident) and I NEVER had to abide by this. I don't get it. Has anyone taken it and had problems with recovery?? Advice? Help before my head falls off!!

Im sorry you are in such pain. I was told to stop taking all meds 2 wks before surgery. They told me if I needed to take something tylenol was all I could take. The reason behind this is certain meds can cause excessive bleeding or blood clots during surgery. If you get migraines I would call your ps and ask what you can take for it thats safe. H TH sorry I couldnt be more help. Good luck.

Hmm I don't know why they said you couldn't take Tylenol. That was the only thing my PS said I could take. If you're in tons of pain I think it'd be ok to take some.

I would avoid the others though because I guess they are blood thinners?

I agree with the other girls. My PA said no asprin or ibuprofen since they can thin the blood and cause excessive bleeding. BUT, I was told to use tylenol if I needed to (especially when weaning off the narcotics). Tylenol is safe to use from a surgical perspective. I am an RN by profession and am not familiar with why you shouldn't take tylenol--would ask your PA to clarify though. I have been using tylenol for about 24 hours now--off of narcotics since they messed with my stomach so much. Good luck!

So then tylenol is ok but everything else is bad?? Arghhhh the only thing that helps my headaches is excedrin migraine which consists of acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine. So I guess I cant take those?? I took two today because I had to..the headache wouldn't go away and it made me nauseous at one point during the night. *sigh*

I'll ask my PS on Monday because I'm pretty sure tylenol won't do the trick..but I guess if I have no choice it might be better than nothing..

hmmm - you may want to call back and ask for a recommendation to an alternative...

What I was told was to not take specific meds that thin the blood ( ibuprofin, motrin aspirin, and some herbal remedies) as this can cause excessive bleeding during surgery. tylenol was not on the list- actually they told me tylenol was fine. Acetaminophen isnt a blood thinner.... dont hesitate to discuss it further with your surgeon, or anesthesiologist.
Stay away from aspirin girl!
good luck!

they should have given you a list of what you couldn't take - I can scan mine to you if you would like (3 pages of specific medicines to avoid). but I do agree with the other girls, I was told Tylonal is ok, Ibuprofen and aspirin are a no no

My PS gave me a list of medications to avoid 2 weeks before surgery and tylenol was not on that list.

tylenol is fine to take. The others advil, ibuprofen, motrin contain aspirin and that's why they are on the no-no list.

I get chronic migraines as well. I was told by my OB when I was carrying my son, that 2 extra strength tylenol and a soda would help. I was surprised that it did. Maybe give that a try. Sorry you are suffering hun, I know they are not fun.

Yep, like everyone said, tylenol is fine, but everything else is a blood thinner.

My PS said not to take any advil or ibprofin types of meds because they are blood thinners. I couldn't take these for 2 weeks before and 2weeks after surgery! He said Tylenol was ok to take. I did have to take tylenol the night before surgery for a migrane, and I helped. My surgery went great and so did the healing process. All PS have different opinions about what you should or shouldn't take. I would discuss this with him, but really....I think the tylenol would be fine to take!!!
