Birth Control and Surgery.

Do they make you stop taking birth control a little bit before surgery? I have a fear of blood clots.. so I'm wondering if they make you stop because of the risk?

My PS let me continue taking my birth control pills during surgery. I never stopped and didnt have any problems. I know other PS's had some of the other girls on here stop. I think it depends on the PS. I also had compression boots on my legs the whole time during surgery, to help prevent blood clots. HTH.

k cool

I am kinda traumatized because my older sister had a baby, and c-section. She got an extensive blood clot. it was so horrible. She doesn't have it anymore and they said it was NOT hereditary. So I should be good..

I don't smoke anything, and I barely drink.. so I'm good in that department.

My personal physician suggested that I stop BC pills now (3 weeks till procedure and am on last week of current pack) and start taking them after I have one full cycle post-surgery. Also, I have to use back up for 2 months after I start taking them again b/c of chance of pregnancy! She said that if I was too worried and didn't feel confident using a backup method that I could continue taking the pills, but I had to make sure that I moved around after surgery and not just lay in bed for a week.

On my sheet of things that cause possible bleeding problems or clots was listed birth control. My form stated it is not mandatory to stop taking it, but to acknowledge the possible risk. Consult with your PS for his recommendations.

Good luck!

i don't even have a date yet

I am so in the beginning of this process..but am way too obsessed already! ha.. I haven't even had a consult yet..but I have emailed the surgeon my MIL had years ago..and she said he was great.. I've heard lots of great things about him.

They told me I have to wait for approx. SIX months after my daughter stops nursing to get the surgery I'm in the process of weaning her.. I'm hoping by the end of this month..she will be weaned..

Basically I need my milk to dry up before I can get new boobs. It's okay though because then I have lots of time to obsess..and research

My PS recommended I stop taking birth control two weeks prior to surgery and couldn't start up again until two weeks after. Just ask, every PS is different

I think I might just stop before..just to be safe..no matter what they say.. so I can lower any risks with that..

My PS was very adament about no birth control before or after surgery. My cycle worked out to where I took the last one two weeks before surgery - the cut off they gave me. And I can start back up two weeks after surgery. I called and asked if I could use NuvaRing since it was local and not digested and circulated throughout my system and they said "No hormones!" So we're using condoms....

This might be a dumb question, but is it safe to abruptly stop taking the pill in the middle of the cycle? I actually just started a new pack on Sunday and went ahead and took one tonight, but I'm hoping to have my surgery super-soon and want to go off them just in case. If it is recommended to stop taking them two weeks before surgery, but you only stop, say, 10 days before, will that still lower the risk of blot clots?

I dont think in general you have to stop your BC pills prior to surgery. I could not take anything that would increase the risk of bleeding 2 weeks prior to surgery. Unless your high risk for clots? The only thing I think you might need to be aware of with your BC pills and surgery-the antibotics you have to take counteract the pill so have a back up plan just in case. This is, unless of course, your PS tells you someting different. GL!

I was told birth control is fine. But if you are really concerned about it, maybe you should contact your ps…..

I was told by my plastic surgeon to stop taking the pill at least two weeks prior to my breast augmentation.

With regards to post-op recommendations, I am not sure yet since my breast augmentation is in a week and a half, but TTmakeover, you are right, the antibiotics can counteract the effect of the pill and therefore, another form of contraception should be used after the surgery.

My PS said I don't have to stop taking it. I'm on the patch and my op is on Monday. I'm pretty sure if there was a huge risk, then every doctor would make you get off birth control.. GL
