![]() | Help! Please tell me about your experience!!
Hello Ladies, I was wondering if you could tell me what type of anesthesia your PS used to put you under and what your personal experience was with that. Would you recommend it or not? I believe most PSs use general anesthesia (I could be wrong) and I have also heard of the term 'twilight' anesthesia. Is twilight anesthesia like the IV sedation with local anesthesia? Novocain (local anesthetic) is supposed to last 18 to 24 hours. Was that your experience? Any and all comments and stories are greatly appreciated!! Thank you all!

I believe that my PS is using the twilight method. She stated I would not be all the way under but heavly sedated. I know that I am a little scared since I have never had this type of sedation and I have only been under general. I know that a lot of the ladies on JBI have been under with the twilight method, some have just got local, and I believe some other have had general.

Actually my fear is that I will feel pain. I have only had experience with general anesthesia. I had a TT back in Feb 2009, had a rotator cuff repair, had removal of gallbladder & thumb surgery all under general! I guess a C-Section would be considered IV sedation & local and I guess I did fine with that. I just want to hear how people have coped during anesthesia. Thanks for sharing!

I had a very bad experience with an infection in my arm the year prior to my breast augmentation, and required 4 surgeries in that year. I did great with all of them-no nausea, no probs. When I had my breast augmentation, I wasn't really that thrilled when I met the anethestist...I told him I was sensitive to meds, but he just said ya ya...the surgery was fine, but I had the hardest time waking up. I was in the recovery room for almost 2 hours...I wasn't nauseated, but everytime I tried to drink something it would come STRAIGHT back up...like in 2 minutes. I therefore couldn't take any pain meds. I got out of surgery at 1:30, went home @ 4pm, had the dr call in a anti-nausea in suppository form @9pm and finally got a pain pill down at about 10:15 or so. It was VERY uncomfortable but I wouldn't say it was super Painful. I survived fine...I mean, the pain meds obviously were beneficial, but if worse comes to worse, you'll be ok until you can keep one down I think. I've never had a reaction like that ever, though, and I think he just gave me too much anethesia. It shuts your digestive system down...which is why everything came back up.

So in your opinion what's better? General anesthesia or IV Sedation with Local Anesthesia? I have been trying to figure out what most surgeons prefer when it comes to doing a breast augmentation.

I had a really great experience with IV Sedation/Local Anesthesia. Didn't remember or feel a thing until I woke up in the OR after. I think because I wasn't under General Anesthesia I wasn't all that groggy/'out of it' afterward.

I haven't had my surgery yet, but my job has a fair amount to do with anesthesia so hopefully I can answer some questions. DISCLAIMER: I'm not an anesthesiologist!! So this isn't official medical advice. Have you ever had anesthesia before? Any issues with it? General is nice because you're out and then you wake up and it's all over. Conscious sedation (which I think is what you were referring to) aka an epidural with something like Versed to put you out a little will ensure that it is easier to wake you back up and get you breathing on your own faster while at the same time you won't have any awareness during the procedure. Have you had your anesthesia consult yet? It really is up to you. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of being "completely out" then I would go with the local. If you have more specific questions please feel free to ask.

During the few days before surgery I was totally freaking out about having general anesthesia because I'd never had surgery and I didn't like the idea of having something down my throat and not able to breathe on my own. However, I barely remember the going to sleep part. They said they were giving me something to "relax" me and I kind of remember them moving the bed I was in and I sort of remember being in a small room with a lot of people moving around and then nothing until I woke up. My first thought was OK, I'm alive and I was dreaming - I had no idea people dreamed under anesthesia!! Then holy crap it hurts.

I just had my breast augmentation yesterday and I had twilight. I love it because I didn't feel all messed up in the head when I woke up. I have had general before and remember feeling sick and really out of it. Don't get me wrong, I was a little loopy, but I never once felt sick or anything. I also think it depends on your body. But if you have a choice, I personally would recommend twilight.

I really don't have a choice, my PS is awesome when it comes to the incisions. He can do any incision you want, TUBA, Crease, Areola or Armpit, but when it comes to anesthesia he is very adamant about doing the 'twilight' because he says the chances of complications go WAY down. I have never had this IV sedations with Local Anesthetic so I was wondering if the members liked it or not...I have had general in the past. Great! Thanks for your input. Now I have to decide how much time to take off from work....Decisions, decisions, decisions! How long did you guys take off from work? Remember I am going from never having a breast augmentation to having an XL breast augmentation
