How long before surgery should you stop drinking alcohol??

I've heard a lot of different time frames, but my PS hasn't said anything yet so I was planning on just quitting 2+ weeks prior...anyone else know what's best??

You deffinatly need to talk to your PS about the things you can and canno have. There are a few things to stay away from. My PS said no drinking 2 weeks before or after. But all PS are different. Ask if they have a list, thats what my office did. They gave you a booklet to read over before surgery and to refer to after surgery. It was a major lifesaver to me.

Hmmm, didn't even think of it. I had quite a few the night before just to calm my nerves!

I didn't make a point of staying off alcohol before my op. I'm surprised it would make a difference?

I was told no Alcohol till 2weeks post op, as Alcohol thins the blood so this can cause excessive bleeding, hematoma's, blood clots and cause scars to heal badly. I would not recommend any Alcohol till after 2weeks (but follow whatever you PS says) also because you'll probably still be on pain meds and antibiotics and you don’t want Alcohol to hinder these meds.

You know, I thought of this too... the night before my surgery as I was sipping a glass (or 2) of wine. I guess I pulled through but i bet most docs would recommend at least a few days.

I had a few with some friends last night, they threw me a belated birthday party. Since my surgery is in just over 2 weeks, I have stopped taking my fat burners and any med (other than tylenol) that are not prescribed. I doubt I will drink anything between now and then as well.

I wouldn't drink a few days before and of course while you are on meds. Alcohol thins the blood and interferes with blood clotting (I believe) and therefor might cause bleeding after the surgery. It is never a good idea to drink alcohol with medication. Ask you surgeon about it, they all are different. I know I was told to not take any aspirin or medication that contain aspirin two weeks prior to surgery.

My ps gave me a list of what not to eat/drink/take for two weeks pre op. On the list were grapes and wine. It didn't list alcohol specifically (besides wine) but I stopped drinking two weeks pre op anyway. Better safe than sorry.

I was told no red wine 2 weeks before and after surgery, and no alcohol of any kind 24 hours before surgery.

But, always check with your PS. I have called mine so many times with questions, and they all understand I'm just trying to do all the right things!

I was told no alcohol two weeks before and two weeks after surgery.

It can react badly with your anesthesia if the alcohol is still in your system. Of course every body is different....but I would check with your PS and anesthesiologist!

My PS said I could drink the night before. Not to much but if I wanted to have a drink with dinner that would be fine. I probably won't though just because it makes me nervous.
