Is it possible to learn to do the splits later in life

When I was a young girl and doing ballet, I could do the splits. I'm more flexible than most, but certainly not all. I can do yoga poses many people can't.

But, I can't do the splits anymore and honestly haven't tried since I was very young. Can someone learn to do the splits at 40 and how long would you think it would take? Is there a process by which to go about it? I know it's a goofy question, but, oh well...

p.s excuse the typos and you're welcome to make an educated guess.

Your question made me laugh. I used to be able to do the splits too and now, well now I'm not even close. I would think if you were diligent with stretching exercises, you'd be able to get there again. But it may be that if we don't keep our muscles stretched as we grow, we lose some of our flexibility. I tend to have tight leg muscles even though I stretch following exercise.

Good question. Maybe you will get some responses from some women who have the answer.

lol...I'm not close either.

Good point on keeping muscles stretched through time as we grow. That's what I was thinking and that's why I put an unlikely option.

Side story...I was at work late one day and a friend of mine and I went into one of the larger rooms. She showed me how she could do the splits and I showed her a handstand. We had fun!!

Yes it's very possible but it will take time and you will have to try and do them every day. And hold for at least a minute or two. And if u do it more than once a day u will get them quicker. I was a gymnastics coach, so it's possible. Just takes work.

LOL I con only imagine trying this now at 32. I can see me now walking with a limp from trying. haha I use to be able to do them YEARS ago when I was a cheerleader. But that was years ago. I'm not anywhere close to being that flexible anymore.

I am not a naturally flexible person, but when I started doing ballet / barre based workouts that included stretching I pretty quickly loosened up. I was doing the splits within 6 months when I'd barely been able to touch my toes when I started. You just need to consistently stretch 5-6 days a week.

dex is an unknown quantity at this point
I was always flexible and could do the splits before when I was younger. I tried again last year for many months and the best I could do was a 3" space between my crotch and the floor.
I still do leg stretches but have given up on doing the splits. Just lost interest.

I was never athletic as a kid and not even in college, but I started working on my splits in my 20s. Got the left and right splits in 2 years maybe. As long as you keep at it and use resistance stretching techniques and stay safe, I think it is attainable . I do aerial silks and pole dance, both of which require flexibility , so that helped me maintain my flexibility. The splits were more attainable than my BA, due to my lack of money LOL

Zouavechic will become famous soon enough
I could go from right to middle to left splits and reverse it by rotating my hips as a kid. Not sure when I lost the middle splits as I stopped dancing for about ten years, but at 25 they were gone for good, I got about 2 inches from them at best. I'm 38 now and still have the left. If I took up ballet again, I'd get the right back in a few months.

I think it depends on your anatomy and what type of exercises you do.

I don't think your question is too odd, I always wondered if I could still do a back handspring!

I voted it depends, however, my old ass has no intensions of trying My daughter taught me to do a cartwheel when I was 33 or 34 and I'm pretty good at them, and they're super fun So, maybe it is? Depends on how bad you want to.

I was a gymnast growing up and I used to be sooo flexible and I am still more flexible than most. I can still do my right split but my left and middle splits are gone! If I worked at it everyday for 6 months - a year I think I could do both of them again. I am sure if you worked on them you would be able to achieve them again as well. So my guess would be 6 months to a year
