Rapid recovery?

The PS I've selected has had FABULOUS reviews. All of the people I have read about going to him have had beautiful results and an excellent experience with him, the staff, and the healing process. However, I am wondering how two different surgeons can implement two COMPLETELY different methods for post op and both be successful... It's just weird how different they are. He uses the rapid recovery method. Some of the differences are:

1. He does not wrap you or give you a strap after surgery. You go home with steri-strips (i believe) and that's it.

2. He says NO bra for at least a month, no wire bras for at least 6 months, and definitely NO sports bras until they've completely settled.

3. He wants you to take a ton of showers the first day (right after surgery) as opposed to waiting a few days.

4. He doesn't restrict movement of your arms at all, as opposed to some that say to leave your elbows at your sides.

5. He suggests going out and driving, shopping, etc the day after.

I understand a lot of the reasoning behind these (gently stretching the muscle to help keep it from being sore and tight, not compressing the breasts so they drop faster, etc.) but it's just SO different from what most people advise and again everyone RAVES about him. Any experience, info, or thoughts on this are most welcome, and thanks for reading the novel of a poll I've created! lol

Here's his site, beautiful before and afters

My PS had me do #1 and #2 but some of those just sound down right miserable! I was sent home with a little piece of gauze & sterri strips and was instructed not to wear any bra for atleast a week, and after that wear a sports bra sparingly. I personally didn't wear a any kind of bra for the first month.

As far as taking showers, moving arms, & shopping. WOW, there is no way I could have done that nor would I have wanted to on the first 3 days. It seems like it would slow down recovery and I didn't feel near well enough to go out shopping. That sounds just nuts to me.

I would say I had a very easy recovery, but my motto is better to be safe than sorry.

I'm curious to see how that would work out though. I would never do it myself but thats not to say it wouldn't work.

I was told by my PS to stretch my arms as far above my head as I comfortably could, and I am having such a smooth recovery. The ace bandage/compression band was taken off post op day 1 by my PS and now I am only wearing a surgical bra, Ive already been out shopping twice, driven, and taken showers and gotten dressed on my own! I am so glad my PS told me to get my muscles moving. I sympathize for the women who are having slower recoveries. I am unsure as to whether or not this has anythign to do with strethching or getting out and being a bit more active but I am certainly thankful that my surgeon had me fo them. I am now post op day 4 and feeling unbelievably great! I would take your PS advice and move around but dont over do it too much. Everyone is different and recovery differs for everyone as well, however, I do recommend stretching. HTH! good luck and keep us updated!

I had what my surgeon calls the 24 hour recovery. My instructions were alittle different than yours, though I did arm exercises starting in the recovery room, showered the next day, wore the strap for about 2 weeks. There are several threads on here you could search 24 hour recovery or rapid recovery.

It's not a crock nor a marketing tool. One of our forum Surgeons has this to say about it:

Thank you so much! I personally have much confidence in my PS and that the method works based on several people's testimonials that have used him. I've also come across so many that haven't done it, but don't believe it works. Again, thanks so much!

Oh my goodness I feel wonderful

I had surgery at 7:30 am and by 11 am I felt at 100%. I'm just a tad tight between showers, but the showers are a godsend and and stetching is doing wonders. I think people that think it's a crock just think that because they had to experience being so sore and can't imagine moving arms around etc. I can put my hands above my head with no problem, just slight tightness. The rapid recovery doesn't push you past your limits it makes you listen to tour body to heal better. It's not like I'm playing volleyball, I'm lightly stretching to keep my muscles from being tight and listening to my body. I genuinely feel bad for those who did not go through the same wonderful process. It's not a crock, it's wonderful.

I voted rapid recovery. I'm just a fast healer. My 1st breast augmentation I was down about 2 days. My 2nd breast augmentation I was only down 1 and even that I was still not on pain meds.

Rapid Recovery System

I am surprized more people don't do the rapid recover system It just makes sense to me. I had my surgery at 8am this morning. I was out and shopping at the mall by 10, went to the movies, did more shopping. I took a tylenol at around noon when the numbness wore off. I did my stretches all throughout the day. I haven't done the shower yet because I've been going non-stop all day. I'm sure it is going to feel really good though.

This process makes perfect sense to me. When exercising and muscles get sore the best thing to do is stretch them out and use them rather than babying them and keeping still. This makes it hurt worse and you get stiff. This is essentially the same concept. We've just pulled a muscle so we should stretch it out to help it recover, just like any other pulled muscle.

I feel great, everyone I've talked to who has used this system feels great too. If you do your homework on it, you will learn this is more than just stretching. The procedure itself is different as well.

I haven't had any surgery yet, but if I do, the rapid recovery method makes perfect sense to me too. I find it hard to believe that more surgeons are not doing this method.

How much swelling did you have with the rapid recovery method?

Hi Rosebud and welcome! I'm in AZ also. I had swelling for about 6 weeks which you can see in my video in the post op forum, at the top as a sticky called Stages of Healing........

Rapid Recovery is a certain technique some surgeons use, not all. Dr. John Tebbetts in Dallas, I believe, is the one who developed the procedure.

Thanks Barb! I watched your video....very informative. How long did the bruising underneath last? That was actually more bruising than I ever thought there would be. I could see it in the Day 13 picture, but there are no pictures after that showing it.

i had basically no restrictions, i had no bruising though i was sore and tight in the chest. i think i've got a high pain tolerance but i thought my recovery would've been slow but after i woke up in the car on the way back home, i was takin it easier than normal. i was bored as hell upstairs so i walked around, did some cooking, played video games and all. i felt good even went grocery shopping on day 2, but pushing overfilled carts suck. it was pretty easy and i got lucky in that part.

I just wanted to let you know I didn't bruise at all. I know this is probably the exception to the rule since most people tend to have some kind of bruising, but I just didn't want you to associate rapid recovery with a certain amount of bruising. I think that probably more depends on your surgeons technique and your body, not necissarily the type of recovery method/instructions.

That sounds a lot like me! Same here, even before I experienced the effects of the rapid recovery method, I was like ... Well that just makes sense! LOL. That's how my PS explained it too. That it's pretty much just that you've pulled a muscle and to lightly stretch it to keep it from tightening up. I hope most girls see this poll and realize it's not a crock etc and that they really can have a super smooth recovery compared to the traditional methods most PSs use. Thanks again chica, hopefully we'll save some girls from some unnecessary pain.

This sounds awesome, However shouldnt the plastic surgeons be praticing rapid recovery only? I mean if its such a good option and they prefer it, Doesnt that make more sense??
Shouldnt there NOT be an option?? From the way I understood it, its a more gentle surgery...So isnt that what they should be doing?

Hmm..Do they charge more this? Just wondering,Thank you

I checked all my progression pics and my bruising was gone around 3 weeks. I'm not sure why my left was more bruised...maybe I just bruise easy. The Rapid Recovery doesn't eliminate bruising, just reduces it from what I understand.

My surgeon doesn't charge more for this; it's the method he uses since it works for the benefit of the patient so much better than traditional procedures. Please see Dr. Sorokins reply in the thread I linked above about surgeons using this method.

It is a more gentler procedure. This approach eliminates the blunt disection, tearing of tissue, bruising the bone, reduces bleeding. The goal is less bruising, less bleeding and less pain. The arm exercises cut down on muscle spasms. If you google it, you can certainly find many surgeons nationwide who practice this method, especially Dr. Tebbetts who developed it.
