I had overs w/ drains for 6 days. Oddly enough I didn't feel a thing when they pulled them out. But I don't think this is the case for everyone.

At my consult I asked the nurse if they use drains and she said they used to, like 10 years ago, but don't any longer because they don't make all that much difference in pain and there is too much risk for infection compared to benefit. She said the actual amount of drainage is only about a tablespoon. To reduce pain post-op they use a pain pump which keeps the area numb for 2-3 days. I guess those tubes are much smaller with less risk of infection? I still have some more questions to ask about this one, but as far as the drains go, the answer was a big NO because of the opinion that they were not necessary and created risk (not to mention painful to get out!). I'm interested to hear others' opinions on this, and also on the use of pain pumps.

Mine drained WAAAAY more then a tablespoon. I was emptying about 20cc every few hours the first night then about 25cc's every half day for the rest of the week.

I had drains, they were a surprise to me! I had a drip and then I found the drain tubes. It put me off the thought of them and I remember reading a testermonial from one woman on a different website saying 'when taking the drains out it was the most painful 2 minutes of her life!' Those words stuck in my head the whole time, I had them for 3 days but I was soooooooooooooo swollen that I would hate to know the outcome if I didn't! Anyway all I thought about for 3 days was the drains being taken out, and ladies I can assure you its not the worst pain ever. My right one pinched a little but I didn't even feel my left one come out, think it was still numb.

yes..

I had drains with sils/overs for 2 days.I think it was done "just in case" or something...I hated drains more than anyhthing else in the whole process was so happy when I had them removed.

I got sili overs and no drains. I am not sure my PS even does them - he did not even mention the possibility.

I had a drain in my belly button wrapped in bandages for about 30 hrs and it was so painful I couldn't walk standing straight by the second day. I think I nearly fainted when he unwrapped me at my day after post-op and I saw all of the blood!!! Sorry,

Saline, partial unders, no drains at all, and no special bra.

I had silicone unders and did not have drains. I also was lucky to have no major swelling or bruising.

I've had drains with all my surgeries, overs, partial unders, capsulectomies. And with each I drained over 300ml each side over a couple of days, so pretty happy not to have that added to my recovery!

I didn't have drains bc my PS said that w/ his procedures there usually isn't a lot of drainage, and drains are an entry way for bacteria and potential infection...if I had a choice, I would try to not have drains..JMO. Good poll!
