Did You Have Drains?

Just curious how many of you had drains. How long did you keep them and did you have unders, partial, or overs?

Benefits of Drains....

I had drains and understand the following benefits thus far:

Reduced swelling
Less stretching of the skin
No boob noise

Note: If it pinches a nerve, OUCH!

i didnt but from my very basic understanding of surgery i think there only needed when there is a actual medical need to remove fluid or if there is a greater infection risk

Second time

I had the drains when I had to get the hematoma excavation, but when I initially got them done I didn't have to. For me it wasn't pleasant. I had to have them for 72hrs.

I didn't have them because there was a medical need. PS prefers to remove fluids rather than have the body absorb them. He believes drains facilitate faster healing. I can't verify that but I can say that I had very little swelling and 0 boob noise. LOL!

I think it is pretty much a given in the UK that you will have drains. Mine were no probs, I had very little swelling no bruising and all is well so far....

I had an overnight stay with my BA and had drains for that 24 hours. They were only painful when they were removed! I had no boobie noise and also very little 'morning boob' but obviously can't say for sure if that was because of the drains or not. I didn't think it was a big deal to have them, and can't really understand why people object so much to them, they're not that bad!

I had drains for 2 days with textured Cogels unders. I am 2 weeks now with no bruising, very little swelling, and the morning boob lasted for a few days only (not sure whether it is related!). The drains didn't bother me at all during my stay in the hospital, just a bit painful on removal of them!

My PS does them on every patient, to remove fluids rather than have the body absorb them which means less infection and faster healing. I had the op on Wed at 9am and had them out the next morning. Seeing the liquid was a little gross but I was so bandaged up and drugged up I didn't care. It hurt a little when they took them out but the pain subsided immediately.

Well, i am wearing a drain right now since Monday. I can't wait to get it off me, to be honest. Having them in hospital for 24 hours is one thing, but when you have to work and go to meetings with lots of key contacts all they long and you have a drain that is like a round bulky bottle, believe me: you just hate them!!

Surely, no swelling, or bruising, and my incision seems to be healing fine. But it's is such an inconvenience!! i didn't want to go out tonight just because of it. Tomorrow my OH wants to take me to a restaurant for dinner. I am so self conscious I don't know if I am going to enjoy it!!

Drains for 24 po yes. Anything else sucks.

I hadn't thought about whether the drains had any thing to do with bruising but I had the drains for 48 hrs and 0 bruising.

I wonder

If the drains play a part in the bruising? As a black female I haven't seen ANY bruising at all as opposed to the bruisings I've seen on the other females, the majority of them white females (I believe). Let me explain, I am not one of those individuals that are caught up on "politically correct" terms, so black, white, latina, etc, that's how I refer unless asked/told otherwise, so please take no offense, but we're all grown iand in some sense an extended family, so you ladies know what I mean. LOL

I had drains for 24 hours after surgery.
I was so drugged up I didn't even know they were there.
I found out I had them when the nurse came to take the out the day after.
