Question Hypertrophic scarring

Wow Penny what a beautiful woman you are!

Okay so this is what happened for me with my first surgery. I was not instructed by my PS either way to treat my scars and I ended up with hypertrophic scarring because I did nothing. Very noticeable raised and slightly red/purplish crease scars. I do smoke quite heavily.

When my PS did my redo he said that he would cut that out and this time he would use permanent inside stitches. I hope that this time it helps. However I was still not instructed to use anything on the scars and I would like to. After reading everyone's responses I am going to go with the silicone sheets.

So for those of you who have used them you cut them down so they match the size of your scars and they stick? And then you leave them on except when you have sex and shower? Do they not feel uncomfortable? TIA.

Thumbs up Dr. Blaine Baby!!!!!!!!!

My PS recommended vitamin E and Maderma....but screw that....I've tried both of those before and didn't have much luck. I've also paid over $70 for Scarguard and that didn't work.

I decided to try Dr. Blaine's Scar Treatment. Someone on this thread recommended it who had also tried everything, so I looked it up on drugstore.com to see if it had any reviews, and it got 5 stars (check it out for yourself!) I ordered it immediately, but then saw it at CVS just this week too. It comes with one silicone gel pad (latex free), which can be cut (I cut it in half and place it on both nipples). You should wear that for 12 hours...sometimes I do more. It also comes with a bottle of E-Sil Solution (50% Vitamin E/50% Silicone Liquid Gel,) which you put on when you don't have the pad on.

The scar gel pad is self adhesive, so there is no need for additional wraps or taping....it's transparent too. The non-sticky side is smooth and soft, so it won't stick to your bra/clothes, etc. It is also washable and reusable! As soon as you wash it, it becomes sticky again. You're supposed to be able to use it for up to 3 months. They also have a money back guarantee! Lol...man, by now you probably think I work for them or something....but really, I don't. I just scar badly and was desperate for another solution.

My PS also mentioned that women of color (I'm a mutt - Latin/Asian American) tend to scar worse and also end up with raised scars more, so I am SUPER paranoid about having raised scars on my nipples. The whole reason I got the incision there is b/c I felt it was the most inconspicuous place, once healed (but not for everyone, I know). Anyway, I'm 11 days post-op and I started using this stuff the day after I got my stitches out (day 5), and so far so good! And believe me...when the stitches were first removed...it was pretty fugly/scary lookin....lol. It's already healing VERY nicely and nothing is raised so far. I know it's still early on, but I just wanted to share!

Here's the drugstore link, which has the reviews at the bottom:

http://www.drugstore.com/products/pr...=BUY-GFI-0-PLP

It's only 19.99, which also proves that just b/c something is more expensive doesn't always mean it works better! I was pretty upset that I wasted over $70 on Scarguard, when I've read so many good things about it. But everyone's body reacts differently when healing...sigh. So no offense to the ladies who had success with Scarguard...I'm very happy it worked for you! Just wish it had worked for me.

I swear by Bio Oil for any scarring. I've been massaging it into the scar tissue and not only is the redness clearing really quickly but also the thickness of the scar tissue. I've used it for a few years now even on old scars and its great. Its also excellet as a bath oil.
Also because my skin was stretched so tight and I couldn't move freely I used it to massage the tight skin and its really supple now. I love it - can you tell hehehe.
Another thing I use during the day is micropore tape. I was told by a surgeon to use this on some scarring I had after a car accident to flatten the scar and it works. Everyone who has seen my incision scars comments on how they are hardly noticable in just 4 weeks.

I have been wearing it virtually 24/7 for 2 weeks and the scars have lightened up a lot. previously i tried mederma, Neosporin silicone strips, Kelocote, and scargel without noticeable benefit, so I am very happy to find something that works.
For whatever reason the "Thanks" button is not showing up here. Anyways thank you so much for recommending this product. I definitely want to use a silicone pad but didn't know which one was best and there are lots on the market. Your post made my decision easy.

Because I live in Canada I found that drugstore.com would not ship to me directly, I would have had to set up some mailbox in the US which was expensive and unnecessary! I then went right to Dr. Blaine's website http://www.drblaines.com/ and I was able to have this product shipped via UPS and it said "expediated". So I'm hoping to see it shortly. I will be taking photos of the progress and will post them for others to see hopeful differences.

My last surgery left awful hypertrophic scars and although my PS used internal permanent stitches this time (he didn't last time and said they will make a difference) I'm really worried. However, my scars already look so much better compared to the last time (he cut those others out when he did my redo) so I'm really hoping for the best.

You're supposed to wait until your incisions are completely healed. Always a good idea to double check with your PS.

I used Mederma for the first 4 mo. but switched to the silicone sheets at 4mo. (presently 5mo.) after reading about all the studies showing their efficacy. I'm using those Dr. Blaine ones too.

My PS wants me to keep my tapes on my incisions until the 6 week mark, but after that I will definitely want to use something. I think I'll check out that Bio Oil since I can pick it up at Walgreen's. Thanks for the suggestions!

Biodermis silicone scar sheet from day 7. Scars around my nipples are pale pink and flat. Recommended to be used for up to 3 months. Expensive $85 AUD.

The silicone sheeting should come with instructions. Generally you change them every 12hours. Wash them under warm soapy water, lighty dry then stick back onto your scar. They will last for at least two months like this. If they loose some of the stickiness, just put some other tape over it to hold in place. Mine are a month old and they have not lost stickiness yet.

Bio oil!
I ended up getting some yucky purple stretch marks about a month post op. I tried a few other things (mederma, carol's daughter's scar cream, shea butter) Nothing seemed to do much. I started using bio oil a few weeks ago. To be truthful, I didn't have alot of faith that anything could help with stretch marks but I've been using it once or twice a day on the stretch marks and on my incision scars (they were pretty reddish) and I can't believe that it actually seems to have lightened them up considerably!
I definitely recommend it!
