Is this a normal part of recovery?

After a few hours in a bra, my nipples feel like they are on fire. They are compressed into the bra and flattened/squashed. They just KILL. I was using some gauze over the nipples up until a few days ago. The combination of lotion, Aquaphor on the incision (peri-areola), and sweat made the gauze stick to the nipples and it hurt to peel it off. I literally have to give the boobs a squeeze to pop out the nipples. I feel like my nipples have been rubbed raw. I can wear certain halter/tank tops braless for a short time frame. But other material rubs teh nipples and it is painful to go braless.

I would greatly welcome any tips of words of advice! Is this a normal part of recovery?

I definately felt that way around my 2nd and 3rd week. Now at 1 1/2 mths out it's mostly just soreness. I hope it ends soon. It can be a bit annoying.

Mine are still super sensitive. That's one reason why I never wear a bra unless I have to (like at work). Can't use the dimmers yet, either, because of the nipple sensitivity. It's getting better, though... they used to KILL me!

This happened to me when mine were about 2 weeks post op and it was awful! It doesn't last for too long though, at least it didn't for me.

With my capsulotomy and crease revision on my lefty, I completely lost all feeling in my nipple. Now, three months out, I'm getting feeling back and it's the same! Kind of like the nipple's on fire and sore. But I know it'll go back to normal now and I'm glad to have feeling again.

This too will pass..... The things we go through!

Is this because of the incision site (aerola) or because of the nerves coming back or something else? does everyone one pretty much go through this during recovery?

I didn't have areolar incisions - I had crease incisions so I don't know if it's related to the incision or not, but I believe it's a nerve issue. Lots of trauma goes on when they put these babies in there! LOL It's pretty normal, and my PS told me that it can sometimes take one year for the feeling to come back when lost. So I'm glad mine's not taking that long to return, even though it's a little uncomfortable.

This is exactly what I have been feeling and was 1 of the 2 main things I was thinking about when I came on here. Its soo frustrating.. getting really old. I'm only 2 1/2 weeks and i guess niavely thought that this would be gone after a week or so just because they told me recovery is about a week.. they mean for functioning somewhat normally I think... not that you feel great after a week. Sighs. At least we aren't alone.. Thanks for posting this thread.

Edit: although I just noticed you have areolar incisions.. I don't .. I have crease incisions..maybe I'm not suffering as bad as you then. But just an overall deep sore sunburn feeling

Oh...it's completely normal! Your nipples could be burning and tingling for a while. As time progresses, it may come and go, and then they may just be extra sensitive. You may also get "zingers" from time to time as the nerves regenerate. Also the skin on your breasts may feel like it's sunburned also. That was a fun one! And, of course, it is normal to be sore for a good while, especially in the morning.

If you can believe this, my PS said to rub my nipples due to the heightened sensitivity. I could only stand to do it through my clothing. Don't worry! It's all part of the process and will settle down eventually. I say better to have feeling than not have feeling. The patches of numbness I had at first (along with the sensitivity) used to scare me the most. I wasn't allowed to put anything on my incisions but the surgical tape for the first few weeks.

I appreciate everyone's sympathy and know that it's all part of the recovery process. Sometimes I feel like such a big baby and chronic complainer. Glad to know everyone else experiences a similar feeling. Thanks so much for putting up with my whining!
