How long did you use muscle relaxers post-op?

So... I was given valium to relax before surgery and as a muscle relaxer. It made me feel funky and I did not really like it, but it sure calmed me down (so much so I was completely useless in fact).

The care instructions (slightly incomplete imho) and label said "Use as needed" and whereas I am sure I don't need it for nerves anymore how do I need if I need it as a muscle relaxer?

I was given 10 pills, which, unless you are particularly nervous might indicate that they should be continued...or?

When the nurse called me the day after surgery she was a bit scattered and didn't fully answer me. Said it was for nerves, but why would the PS then give me 10? I noticed several posts on the forum mentioning taking muscle relaxers after surgery. Uhm...?

It is Sunday and I'll call my PS tomorrow, but just out of curiosity, how long did you use muscle relaxers?

Warmly,
Bloom

My PS gave me 20 Flexeril, and I was very glad to have them. I used them around the clock the first few days, and then just at night to help me stay more comfortable for sleeping. Valium is a benzodiazapene, so it can be more habit-forming than a straight muscle-relaxer, but 10 of them doesn't sound like it will land you in rehab!

Hi darling! I was given 20 muscle relaxers and 30 lortabs. I only took them the first three days. After that, there wasn't really any point because I wasn't in pain. I was uncomfortable of course, but I'd rather have my body get back to normal and fight to heal faster than to take those. HTH

I see, thanks!! I only used one before surgery, concluded it was mainly for nerves (didn't really like them either), so the 9 remain untouched. I am just a bit surprised I didn't have clear instructions. I am getting anti-biotics, mild steroids, got anti-nausea stuff, vicodin etc, but was wondering why no muscle relaxer instructions (don't really know how to determine "as needed" for a muscle relaxer)...hence my question to you guys..
Thanks for the explanation!

Perplexedly,
Bloom

Yeah, I have a feeling I am fine not taking them - not crazy about taking too many drugs. Thanks for sharing your experience, hun! It helped!

Hehe!! Yes, I find it particularly healing just to sit very still in the recliner and browse the forum! Works just as well as drugs *lol*! (except that I am not entirely ready to let the vicodins go)
Happy continued healing to you too, darling!

I'm still taking mine, day 12! Flexeril, 3 times a day. I think it's because I went under the muscle... doc thinks it prevents CC.. I don't know - I don't really notive the difference. I'm surprised Valium was given as a muscle relaxer though... i'd have thought that would mainly just affect your nerves... anyway - I'm still on them - but sounds like i'm in a minority!

Yeah, the instructions were a bit unclear for the valium but I only took one before surgery (didn't like the feeling). I'm still all groggy from meds and cannot wait to stop them (trying to let go of the Vicodin now, 3 more days of mild steroids and 4 of antibiotics *argh*). Think I'll suggest my PS to be more specific on the med sheet to avoid confusion.

i was given a prescription for an actual muscle relaxer and was told to take them the first 3-4 days every 6 hours. this made me feel GRRROOOOSSSS, but they did help alleviate the tight feeling.

my doctor says to keep taking one just at night while i sleep as it will help loosen up those pesky pectoral muscles. so i just remembered to do that last night. i think i shall continue until my bottle runs out!

I was given a week's worth of Robaxin (aka methocarbamol) to take every 6 hours til 1 week recheck. At that recheck, I asked for more- actually double the dose of what was initially prescribed (that's the high end of the dosage range) to help with spasming. I'm a bodybuilder and have sizable pec muscles. Also didn't have any breast tissue, got silicone unders. The muscle relaxers have helped with the tightness tremendously! Now, at 3.5 weeks, I'm taking 2 tabs as needed- only when I feel the tightness, spasming, or like I've overdone it. Just got 2 more refills written, too. I think this will help them to relax and d&f better and help to decrease my chances of tearing pec muscle/attachments.

But every doc is different, so, of course, ask your ps for his/her advice.

I took muscle relaxers for a week, 2 times a day, per my doctors instructions. I think it really helped, because when they'd start to wear off, I could feel my pecs start to cramp up (i had unders). I'm glad I took them!

I was given valium for muscle relaxant for like a week i think. It helps a lot with the tightening of the muscle especially in the morning. When I finished it my ps didnt refilled it anymore as he knew also Im taking flexeril for my tmj which is also a muscle relaxant but i just have to double the dose. So it still helps a lot especially at night. For some people it affects them differently but for a person like me it helps a lot.
