Swelling with overs
I was just wondering, how long does swelling last with overs? Approximately? If you have overs, how long do you think it lasted for you?
It already seemed like my swelling had gone down pretty much completely save for the slightly higher up and hard right boobie, but there was no swelling around the cleavage area for example. Now today my cleavage area is raised again, well the upper half of it anyway, and I'm half freaking out about symmastia (even though I can feel the implants are a good inch away from my cleavage and there's just skin and fatty tissue around the cleavage area) and half assuring myself that for some reason the swelling just came up again. Maybe because I spent so much time with my arms up dying my hair or something I've also noticed that the swelling on my right boob seems to have gone down noticeably over the past few days so maybe it's migrated more to the cleavage area? It used to do a lot of sloshing and that's disappeared now so maybe some fluid that was trapped in there is finally getting out into the areas surrounding it to get absorbed by the body? When the initial swelling went down the swelling seemed to sort of migrate downwards before it disappeared. Am I wrong in assuming that if there's only slight puffiness in the cleavage area I shouldn't freak out during the first month or two at least? It doesn't hurt save for a slight tenderness in my muscles from flexing them and poking at the puffiness in front of the mirror (stupid, I know!). Half of me knows that it's too early to be freaking out yet but the other half is screaming that symmastia can start happening almost immediately. I'm gonna sleep with some socks between my boobies now because I roll onto my side during the night without noticing and I'm worried even that might damage my boobies! Yikes! Now I know what you ladies meant when you said the real waiting part comes after the surgery

I had some considerable swelling right off the bat, but it has (to my knowledge) subsided now. I had fluid under/in my chest, above my boobs, up to my collarbone that was severe enough that my dh could see my skin move & hear it slosh around. Kinda freaked me out at first, but it went away. I can't say that I've had any swelling return once it went away, but I don't believe it is uncommon for that to happen either. I would guess it is just excess fluid moving around & being absorbed. But, it wouldn't hurt to phone your ps if you are concerned.
Guess I am not much help here!

Yea, if it still looks like this I'll call the PSs office tomorrow, both for the peace of mind AND just in case something's wrong so they know it started early on and have a record of it.
I've just started thinking though, before I had sloshing under my right implant and it's simply not there anymore. Like, if I leaned over I could feel the bottom part of my implant flop away from my chest tissue and heard a noise, and then I felt the implant flop back to its normal position when I got up. I was rinsing out hair colour upside down so I wouldn't get any of the rinsing water on my incisions... So it could very well be that the fluid that was sloshing in my right boob got moving whilst I was upside down and thus I have slight swelling from halfway my cleavage almost to the clavicle area. I hope it's just that, anyway, it sounds like a far-fetched theory but it's the only thing that comes to mind! I'll at least pretend that it must be that so I can get some sleep tonight

And, if it allows you to sleep better tonight, then go with it...until you can prove otherwise. I was in that surgical bra for a week & wasn't even allowed to take it off for showering, so I had to bathe in a shallow bath & wash my hair under the faucet. I expect I was leaning over in the same manner as you while doing it & can relate to the implant moving/sloshing sound. It happend a bit at first. If you had a lot of excess fluid, I think that sounds like a completely plausible scenario. Let me know how things are going tomorrow.

Ina, are you massaging? I had drain tubes so I didn't have alot of swelling. I did though have the hardness and even with massaging it lasted about two weeks. I would call your PS though and confirm with him and see what he says.

I'm not massaging, my PS said no massage and the nurse said that massaging gently won't hurt... I have textured implants so that's probably why. I'm off to bed for now and I'll probably continue worrying about it tomorrow

Well, I called the PSs office and they said it might be just swelling, it might be symmastia, or that it might be just normal skin stretching that happens with big implants when you flex your muscles. They asked me to email them some photos, I did, and they said it's nothing to worry about. The consultant lady herself has my size implants and she says she's always looked like that when she flexes, and that the skin is attached to the sternum with tissue that's a bit stretchy so it's only natural it raises up just a little bit. Also from the photos I sent the PS could clearly see both implants were still neatly in their pockets, so I shouldn't worry. And also, quit flexing your muscles it's too early, that's what she said
So I'm going to quit worrying unless it gets noticeably worse!

Ina,
It's totally possible that it's only swelling, especially at 12 days post-op. I do think it's too early to tell right now. Wearing a sock in your cleavage to bed is a good idea, it wont hurt your healing and it will make you feel better. I did that too, and in my case it was just paranoia. Hey girl, I had that problem too, I would think I was done, recovered, healing nicely, and then something ELSE would swell up or be uncomfortable. It's a real pain in the butt, I know. It sounds normal to me...all the stages of healing. You are still pretty early in recovery....hang in there. I was worried about sym. too...but it was just swelling..you sound like you are doing well. Last edited by Nikki; 05-24-2008 at 04:29 PM. |

I'm relieved too
I put the pictures I emailed the clinic to my yahoo group as well. Also, I am rather impressed, within an hour of emailing the pictures I received a call with my answer. My PS was actually in a conference in Vienna but the consultant had tracked him down and gotten him in front of the computer to take a look at those! Makes me feel cared for and they took my concern very seriously, I was afraid they'd just brush it off for some reason.

No, and I do think that it depends on what you're doing that day...when I was recovering, and this is like a month out, I would be goofing around with my kids, or whatever, and sure enough, the next morning I would be swollen again. We just over-do, I think.
What we need is nannies, and house maids, and a chef, so that we can sit and relax while we recover for 6 weeks...THAT'S what we need. Edited: your picture in your avatar is great, by the way. smokin' hot.
