How much vitamin e should i take ?

Hey y'all

I started to take vitamin e 3 days ago. I've heard it can prevent cc and that it is also good for softening, is it true ?

I've read previous thread about it and i'm quite confused about the daily amount i should be taking. (ps didn't have any idea either) Any suggestion ?

thanks Marieh, your regimen makes sense, i'll check with my ps if it's ok to take as much in the beginning, but i am sure he'll be fine with it.

i've read on another forum that taking vit.e really helps to soften the tissues as well as to prevent capsular contracture. since it is an antioxidant it might do good to the skin too..

Question Another Vitamine E Ques.

All my life Ive taken a daily mutlivitamin. On the label it says it has 100% daily value of vit E. Does this mean that any additional vit E vitamins I could take would just be a waste?

I may be able to help you a little - I am a biochemist and have some knowledge of vitamin e and it's mechanisms of action.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and this in effect means it stops us from "rusting" and so can help reduce stress on our cells, reduce inflammation and help healing. It also works in the inhibition of platelet aggregation (platelets are formed in blood clotting) and protect the integrity of red blood cell membranes so this can help with reducing bruising etc. NOTE: this inhibition of platelet formation means that you shouldn't take vitamin e 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after your BA or any other op as you don't want the chance of excess bleeding, you want your blood to clot.

Some studies have noted that vit e works best in combination with other antioxidants such as vit c and other members of the vitamin e family. The vit e in most supplements is alpha-tocopherol and there are other tocopherols such as gamma-tocopherol which are also of therapeutic benefit. If you can find a supplement that has gamma-tocopherol as well that is good, but I don't know if such a supplement exists. My advice would be to try and eat foods naturally high in vit e to get the complete tocopherol family and supplement with a capsule as well. Try nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, whole grains, and leafy greens.

The 100% daily value on your supplements is referring to the fact that it provides 100% of the vit e you need to stop you having a nutritional deficiency. More vitamin e than that is ok. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) of 1,000 mg daily (about 1,500 IU of natural vitamin E or 1,100 IU of synthetic vitamin E) established in 2000 by the Institute of Medicine allows for a reasonable range of self-prescribed supplement doses of vitamin E. Marieh, your initial 2000 unit regimen is above the limits but I don't think that is too dangerous - I am not a doctor and you should go with what your doctor recommends. It sounds to me like a useful guideline as a regimen to follow. Remember though that vit e is fat soluble which means that anything your body doesn't immediately use is stored rather than passed out in your urine and so vit e toxicity is possible, if you take too much.

Vit e has also been shown to work topically on scars for healing. Just get a capsule and pierce it with a pin and squeeze the oil onto your palm and then smear on your scar. I would suggest a high-potency vit c cream as well. Rosehip oil has a lot of vit c in it. This is what I'm going to do when my incisions heal. And I'm going to start taking vit e capsules when my 2 weeks post-op is up.

Sorry if this is too scientific. Hope it helps.

Cheers
