Trouble eating

I haven't been able to eat well since surgery. And the antibiotic my PS makes me so sick. I have to eat something when I take it. I am able to eat a cracker before I take it, but it takes me half an hour to eat the frickin cracker, and I am trying not to throw up while eating it.
When will my tummy feel better? I know all this medicine has to be the cause, since I don't usually ever take anything except a multivitamin.
Your experience with tummy troubles would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks goils!

Sorry you are feeling this way.

I would call your ps and let them know how you are feeling. Possibly they can change something you are taking. Are you taking medicine for pain? Can you change that to Tylenol? That would probably help.

Yep, I'm taking myself off pain meds today, I haven't been taking a lot because of the pump, mostly just to help with the pain on the sides and in my back.
I am going to keep taking the muscle relaxers, they help a lot.
I did tell my PS that the antibiotics make me sick and he said I need to eat something before taking them. He really wants me to stay on these antibiotics.
I just don't feel hungry. And trying to force dry salty crackers down my dry throat makes me sick, too.
Oh well, I guess I will just have to tough it out. It could be worse, I guess.
Thanks so much!

Try some Ensure or get some Instant Breakfast. Both are liquid and I think will act as if you are eating something. When you are feeling better and eating more foods if you have some of the Instant Breakfast left mix it in to pudding for extra nutrition.

Good luck and hope you are feeling better soon.

Great idea June! Thanks so much! I'll tell hubby to stop at the store and get some on his way home today.
Really, that is a great idea, I should have thought of it. ;-)

Even a cup a soup or hot chocolate is something and probably easier to get down than crackers...fortunately this was not one of my problems afterwards I was eating for England the day of my op ! J x

LOL Jayne! That was funny. I'll try hot chocolate, too. That actually sounds yummy right now, and we have some.
I just popped open a Pepsi, and the bubbles are making my tummy feel better.
I'm also going to tell hubby to bring home some 7UP.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try them all!

My antiobiotics as usual gave me severe indigestion, and it got worse when i ate, so I avoided eating as much as I could...someone told me to buy the yogurts that are for not stripping the tummy of good bacteria (im sorry, im so useless remembering names of things, my age i guess)

What I wanted to say though, when i saw my nurse day 7 to remove the stitches i told her about my tummy probs, and she said i shouldve stopped taking the antiobiotics by day 5 if they hurt me that much, i was horrified as I thought those antiobiotics were saving me from infection, but she said they are more of a precaution than anything...so call your ps and verify whether you can stop taking them(forgot to look how far post op you are )

A good tip from nurses for sickness or feeling sick is coke thats gone flat, plus plain dried biscuits, apparently its gentle on the stomach plus replaces salts etc that the body will lack through not eating...

It's probably from all the meds, but check with your PS. My body was not used to all the extra stuff as I usually only take a multivitamin too. I did not get my appetite back for about 1 week and still did not eat much for another week. Have you tried graham crackers instead of saltines? I could not tolerate the saltiness but the graham crackers settled okay. I pretty much lived on jello (this may sound gross) and baby food such as bananas and applesauce. This way, I did not even have to chew anything. Sorbet also seemed to work for me. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Peaches,
I didnt have probs eating but I had a hell of a time keeping the food down. I was throwing up everyday for the first 3 days post-op. I hear that ginger ale is good for nausea, I drank lots of it.

I know its kind of a bad spot youre in b/c you have to take the antibiotics no matter how they make you feel. Take care.

Have you tried soup (just the plain broth type ones, like chicken noodle) - that worked for me the first few days. I also ate crackers, pudding, jello. I didn't really have a problem with digestion but I can imagine it's uncomfortable. You may want to call your PS and they could make some changes or advise you on your meds.

Anne, Carli, Blondy, & Galore...LOVE your suggestions. I talked to my PS's nurse today...she said try some different foods first, and see if they help. If I still can't handle the antibiotic then they will either prescribe a new one, or just say forget it. I was given antibiotics intravenously before surgery, and during, plus I took two the night before (right after dinner, had no probs), and so I will probably be okay. But they'd like me to try and take the rest.

Now I have to call hubby and tell him to turn around and go back for sorbet! LOL! Lucky he loves me or he might get annoyed.

milla will become famous soon enough
denise, when you're taking antibiotics you should also take some probiotics to balance out your system.

these come in various forms, e.g. milky drinks, yogurts or even tablets. the drinks are tiny so they won't make you sick.

ps - i didnt read all this thread so apologies if this has already been suggested.
