Attn: All percocet takers

Doc said he only gives percocet but.....

I had taken percocet for the first and only time a few years ago for my wisdom teeth and it made me mental! Only on them for 2 and a half days too. I cried for no reason, I would get caught between stages of sleep where I could hear everything going on around me (like the tv on) and be awake in my mind (thinking I hated what was on tv and needed to change the channel) but could not wake up. Sounds when I was falling asleep, like the fan I sleep with on, sounded like an air force jet taking off in my room - everything was so loud! And for about 2 weeks after I stopped taking them I felt like I was stuck in my body.... I didnt feel like myself as if I couldnt connect with my physical body - zombie like... Weird!

Told my doctor this and he said I could take the percocet or tylenol.

What to do what to do

I react the same with pain killers. I was told by my plastic surgeon to take 1/2 the tab instead of the whole and see how that works, and actually it worked great for me.

He told you, you can take it anyway? Is he your plastic surgeon? Did you have work done by him yet? If not find another plastic surgeon. If so...talk to one of the plastic surgeon here and asked them what they suggest for you to do.

Imagine not having pain and taking percs...this is the reason that they are one of the most sought after for stoners, yuck!

They made me extremely sick, I couldn't keep down any food. I stopped them the day after my surgery and just took Extra Strength Tylenol. It managed my pain level just fine.

I was prescribed percocet too. They make me super nauseous. I chose to take the percocet for the first 36 hours (with anti-nausea suppositories) but then I switched to extra strength tylenol. I have been doing fine on my pain. A little sore, but nothing bad. I am on post-op day 3 now. I don't blame you for wanting to stay away from the percocet, especially if you had a bad experience with them in the past. But, you also don't want to be in pain, or your body cannot heal!

I have had zero problems with the perkocet randomly I got sick twice but it was times I hadn't eaten and I was trying to do too much activity. Im 9 days out and don't hurt my incisions are hurting some and I have been taking one at night still too sleep because my muscles etc... are so sore after working a 13 hour day I sleep all night with no wake up's to interrupt my sleep for the next day. I would try to take half and eat... my first day back at work with the perck. I felt stupid

I took ONE percocet on the night of Day 1 and it really screwed me up - I was dizzy, nauseous, bloated... it really sucked. After that experience, I didnt take any pain killers at all... The pain is much more bearable than the sick feeling the percs give you. Start with the Extra Strength tylenol, and move to percs if you really really need to.

I was prescribed vicodin and as the other poster said with any painkiller, you can usually cut them in half which can help if its too strong, or you get weird side effects.

Another note, I never needed my vicodin after my BA, extra strength rapid release tylenol was plenty for me! So there is a chance you may not even need them. Have the tylenol on hand in case.

Good luck hun!

When I spoke to plastic surgeon he did seem alarmed. Maybe I'll go for 1/2 and see what it does. Ughhh! I don't want to be in pain but I also dont to feel like a looney toon!

I don't understand why your plastic surgeon won't prescribe a different pain med for you. Percs are NOT the only choice out there. I can't take percocet either. It makes me violently nauseous. I prefer pain to that...... Anyway, I told my plastic surgeon and she prescribed Vicodin instead. Plus Valium as a muscle relaxant, since a lot of the pain is cause by your muscles being so tight over the implant. That combo seemed to work really well for me. Maybe it would work for you? Either way, hopefully you won't need the meds for long and will be ok with Tylenol. I switched to that on my 2nd day post-op and it was enough.

I was consulted with by the anesthesiologist, regarding my medication during surgery, and was told that my surgeon would prescribe what I needed post op. However they all asked me if I had any problems with any drugs. I discussed the options at length.
I was told by everyone that they didnt generally prescribe percecet because was a stronger narcotic than what would be needed..
They tend to go with tramecet.. Which I have taken without issue.

There should be discussion involved. Percecet is a strong narcotic. Tramecet is a good alternative for some people. Perhaps bring up This option to your prescriber. Everyone is different and there should never be one rule for everyone.
Good luck.

They also make me very sick. I could not keep anything down and the plastic surgeon had to call in a suppository for nausia. YUCK!! I then started taking 4 advil every 6 hours and it worked great!!

I guess I am the odd one out here. I loved the percocet. It relieved my pain and left me in my opinion much more clear headed than vicodin ever did. I was in so much pain that I actually got a second perscription, which I ended up not taking. I can't believe other women were able to take extra strength tylenol and have enough pain relief...that never would have worked for me!
I tooke Emend before surgery and was able to eat so nausea was not an issue for me.

I had percs for my BA and now for my kidney stone. I have to take them with food, usually yogurt, so I don't get sick. They make me very sleepy.

I really hope your plastic surgeon will work with you and give you a different pain medicine. Your experience sounds very scary. Does he give a muscle relaxer in addition to pain meds? If that is they case the relaxer and tylonol may be enough for you.

Ask for Lortab. Its just as good, and they have generics that work just as well (i.e. Hydrocodone). any pain killer is going to make you a little loopy though. Most people do have trouble getting into a regular sleeping pattern. And mood swings are normal.

There are lots of other things he can prescribe you. If he's telling only one or the other, I'd think twice about what I was having done with him. He should be concerned about your welfare after surgery, not what he prefers to give people.
