Going to class on day 3 post op?!?
My ba is scheduled for the 23rd of this month. Four more day!!! Thing is that I'm taking a class right now and I have a test next Monday! I'm freaking out that I'm not going to be in the best shape to go in and take that test but unfortunately I have no choice. My professor made it clear that no excuses will be taken for missed tests unless there's been a death involved! Uhhh, I hope that i'll be semi okay to get through it. I'm not really about taking narcotics, I waited as long as I possibly could while going through childbirth to get something so I don't think that me being drugged up will be the issue. It's the anticipated pain and swelling and inability to hold a pencil and cirlce in some little bubbles on my test that's bothering me . my hubby took off that Monday so he could drive me but he can't help me while I'm in class...Keep your fingers crossed for me girls......Anyone else go through something like this?

I didn't have to take a test that soon after my BA but I will say on day 3 you probably won't give a flying kite about doing well on a test. Especially if you don't want to take pain meds. Is there any possible way you can request to take the test early? How comfortable are you with telling your professor you are having surgery? Not that he needs to know what kind but maybe that will help in rescheduling for you. I hope it works out for you one way or another. I will say that on my 3rd day out I went shopping with a friend and out to lunch...I was also high on Vicodin so thinking wasn't really a strong point for me that day. So you wont necessarily be bedridden but I just can't imagine that I would be in any condition to take a test (mentally) 3 days after. Good luck to you though!

no, my professor is known for her super toughness... unfortunately she has said that you only have that one day to take the test and if you don't show up, then it's a 0 and you can pretty much kiss you grade goodbye...i can't afford not to take the test because i need it to finally advance to the next part of my education...Should I take the drugs then or are they going to make me loopy and lose all the info that I have stored in my head?

You'll know from taking the drugs the previous days whether they'll make you loopy or not. I don't which would be worse and take away more from your test, being loopy or being in pain. You'll have to decide by how you feel, I guess. And maybe you'll be lucky and off the stronger pain meds by then. I quit taking Vicodin on my third day post-op and switched to Tylenol and was ok with it. How long do you think the test will take? An hour? More, less? I think you'll be fine to hold a pencil and fill in circles. Just keep your arm close to your body and supported on the desk. It stinks that you can't reschedule the test, but if you can't, you'll have to get through it somehow and then hopefully, you'll have some time to rest and give your body a break.

I went to school on day 5 and drove myself. Day three I still had the pump, so it might have been do-able.

I was still nauseous on day 6 from the pain meds. Sooooo, it really depends on your body. I know this sounds really drastic... but could you possibly change the date of your BA?
I know I'm not the norm around here... but I was sleeping for a good 4 days before I could function correctly. My pain threshold is high and I was still out of the game for that long. It's quite possible that you may be lucky and have no pain... but you just never know. I just would hate to see your school stuff compromised because of elective surgery. |

Day 3 and 4 were the worst for me. I thought I was going to get caught up on alot of my school work since I had my BA on the Monday of spring break. No way did that happen.

We all recover differently but on day 3 I don't think I would have been in any shape to go out and take a test. I know your teacher has a reputation for being tough but have you told her that you're having surgery?. I once took an online class with a teacher who came across as a real hardass and I mixed up the dates I was supposed to take a test and missed it. It would have dropped my final grade from an A to a C. I went in and talked to the teacher and he was totally different than in class, very accomodating. Might be worth a shot, you don't lose anything by asking.

Hang in there, girl. If you have no choice in the matter....just keep a positive attitude. Sounds like you have a high pain tolerance. Try not to stress about it...the anxiety will drag you down. With my first BA, I was back at work in 5 days. I'm a dental hygienist and use my arms all day. Everyone is different BUT, I think you can make it through the test. Good luck!! Let us know how you're doing!

Is there anyway you could take the test early?? I mean, you are having SURGERY for goodness sake! My hubby has had to do that once...but his professor sounds a bit more reasonable than yours!!
Honestly, for me and my experience, I can't imagine having to perform on an important exam day 3. It wasn't even so much the pain pills...I think I had basically quit taking them day 3...but I was still kinda loopy just from the anesthesia and physical exhaustion. ...don't want to discourage you at all. Everyone heals differently. And, I'm an old lady. My brain is busy making gray hairs and holding back the wrinkles!! |

I'd say take Tylenol not the scrip meds before the test. You'll have to have someone drive you and pick you up!!!!! Then go home and sleep.
Good luck on both the BA and the test. |

I couldn't do it. Day 3 I wasn't up to do morning than I had to and I did what I had to due to some unfortunate circumstances and I paid for it, but I know I wasn't mentally prepared for testing. I was trying to study for a test and I know I read the same line about 5 times and I was thinking to myself, why are they repeating themselves and I'm the one reading the book. LOL However I wish you good luck!

Everyone's recovery is different. I would have been fine to go in and take the test. Just make sure that you are off the heavy pain pills so that you can concentrate on the test.

I Beilive you will be okay taking your test. just don't make any sharp fast movements. I am on my 4th day and I could take a test if need be, but I would TRY not to take yur pain pills until afterwards, you may fall asleep takin it...lol
GOOD LUCK!

thanks so much girls...I'm really going to try to make without the strong pain killers after the surgery, the side effects just kind of freak me out...The one and only time I've ever had any strong pain medication was a really bad experience so i think I'm going to give it a brave try. I'm not worried about the pain and the test is only an hour so I'm going to stay positive and hope for the best. Thanks for your input! I'll let you guys know how it goes

Well, just as everyone says...each body is different. Let me tell you that this was nothing like chlidbirth. Just my oppinion. Childbirth was easy for me and I felt strong and ready. There is just some unknown feeling when you have the BA. Each person feels differently and each person heals so differently. I myself was sick as hell the third day from the IV sedation medication not from my meds. The meds did make my stomach ache though and I had to eat when taking any of them. The third day was my hardest and most emotional day. I would think that if you take your test and do it as fast as you can you will be fine. Yes, you can hold the pencil and the only prob |
