Delveen's Breast Cancer and Breast Augmentation Story
On June 30, 1999 at the age of 40 I finally felt grown up enough to make the decision to get breast implants without getting anyone else's opinion or approval! I got 500 cc Hutchinson Round Smooth implants via the
transax (armpit) incision.
I was thrilled with my new friends and just starting to have the time of my life with them, (shopping, going out). At 9 months post-op, I noticed something kind of hard on the outside of my right breast, I just thought the implant was sitting funny and maybe it was a valve or a
ripple in the implant! I was due for a mammogram anyway, so I went in, they took one look at the film and whisked me into ultrasound where I saw an oval shaped growth about the size of an almond, the Dr. recommended I get a biopsy since he felt that it looked very suspicious. Two days later I went for a biopsy (not fun and I was terrified he would puncture my implant). It turns out the it was a malignant tumor! The next few days were a blur but within the week I was in surgery having it removed via. The removed the tumor but did not remove my implant (I think because I threatened them if they did). However they did knick it in surgery so it deflated about 1/2 the size. I then went through 6 weeks of radiation.
After waiting 6 months I finally had the shrunken implant removed and replaced with a tissue expander with restretched the skin over the next 6 months. That was then removed and replaced with Becker 50's 600cc. My PS replaced both sides at this point with the
Becker Expandable breast implants. This was done on June 20,2001.
I was recovering when at 5 weeks I woke up one morning with my breast swollen and sore and feeling as though I had the flu. Later that night I noticed my right breast was red and hot. I went to the ER where they gave me Rocephin (antibiotic) IV. The next day I went and saw my PS he sent me to the hospital to have the fluid that was built up removed. They removed over 300 cc's of fluid, and he ordered to continue the Rocephin IV for 10 days, so a home health nurse came twice a day to do that. Once that was finished I was given Cipro 750 twice a day for 6 weeks. On the second to last day of taking the Cipro, the infection returned. I was then hospitalized for 4 days and given Ancef-2gm every 6 hours. After 4 days the infection seemed stable so they sent me home with what is called a Pic line (just a more permanent IV line), I then gave myself IV shots of Ancef, twice a day for the next month. I just finished the antibiotics about 10 days ago and it seems that it has worked and I feel that it has this time. Even though everything I've went through, I've never once regretted getting them and looking back now, I actually credit the implants for helping me find the tumor since It pushed my own tissue up and made the tumor easier to feel. I only hope now I can finally start enjoying them without worrying all the time, because damn it, I think I've earned them now!
