Certification of Surgical Suites
If your surgeon is a member of the American
Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and has
an in-office surgical suite, you will need to
confirm that it has been appropriately
accredited.
As of July 2002, the ASAPS put into effect it's
new policy requiring the following of all ASAPS
member surgeons:
Surgeries performed under anesthesia, other than
minor local anesthesia and/or minimal oral or
intramuscular tranquilization, must be performed
in a surgical facility that meets at least one
of the following criteria:
- Accreditation by a national or state
recognized accrediting agency/organization
- Certification to participate in the
Medicare program under Title XVIII; or
- Licensure by the state in which the
facility is located.
Bear in mind that this only applies to plastic surgeons who are members of the ASAPS.
In any event, you will need to inquire about the availability of life-saving equipment, who will be administering the anesthesia, etc., just to be safe. Other accrediting organizations to contact are:
JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations)
AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care)
AAAASF (American Association for Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facilities)
