Breast Augmentation and Breast Implants Risks and Complications
This section covers the risks associated with breast augmentation surgery. While the odds are definitely in your favor that you won't have any of these problems, it's still a good idea to familiarize yourself with this information.
Capsular Contracture
- Capsular contracture occurs when the pocket containing the implant begins to shrink, or contract. Learn the various grades of capsule contracture, view photos, learn about new treatments, surgical treatments, and more.
Bottoming Out
- Learn what bottoming out is, how it is repaired, and view photos.
Symmastia
- Symmastia occurs when the pocket is over-dissected. This can result in the pectoral muscle (or skin, in women with implants over the muscle) lifting off of the sternum. Symmastia is a very difficult complication to repair. Find out more about symmastia, how it is repaired, and view photos.
Hematoma
- A hematoma is a collection of blood around a surgical site. Learn how they are treated in breast augmentation patients, and view photos.
Deflation/Rupture
- All breast implants have the potential to rupture or deflate. Learn more about it, and view photos of women who have had rupture or deflation of their breast implants.
Seroma
- Fluid accumulation around the implant is known as seroma. This is not a serious complication, but it may require aspiration (drainage via a needle). Get more information, and view photos.
Necrosis
- Necrosis is the medical term for "tissue death". This is not a common complication, but it is still risk. Learn more about it by clicking on the link above.
Changes in sensation
- A possible risk of breast augmentation surgery is that you may (or may not) lose sensation in the breast, or, you may be overly sensitive. Read more by clicking the link above.
Gel Bleed
(silicone only) - Information on silicone gel breast implants and gel bleed.
Infection
- Infection is a risk with any type of surgery, and breast augmentation is no different. Get more information on the signs of infection, how it can be treated, and more.
Mondor's Cord
(not a "complication", per se) - Mondor's Cord is a fairly common thing in breast augmentation patients. Learn more about what it is, how to treat it, and view photos.
Dissatisfaction with results
- As with any type of cosmetic plastic surgery, there is no guarantee that you will be satisfied with the results. Plastic surgeons are just that...plastic surgeons. While they can make drastic, and beautiful changes to our bodies, they are still limited in what they can do. Click for more information.
Interference with mammography
- Breast implants can cause difficulty in getting clear views when mammograms are performed. Learn more about techniques used in mammography on women who have undergone breast augmentation surgery.
