how sick do you have to be for your surgery to be cancelled?

i have a scratchy throat, kinda tired, but other than that, no other symptoms. i'm not sure if it's allergies or i'm coming down with a cold. my surgery is thursday and i've heard that they will draw blood the morning of and test your "levels" to make sure you're healthy enough for surgery. if i do end up getting a cold, will they cancel surgery right there on the spot? or do i have to be worse off than a cold? of course i don't want to put myself at risk for not being able to fight anything off b/c i have a lowered immune system, but i've been looking forward to this since FOREVER...and now it's finally here and i may have caught my 4 year old's cold! WTF!?!?

Sorry you are feeling under the weather. I would not think a regular cold will halt your surgery. If you had the flu or respiratory infection etc, then maybe.

You will just be uncomfortable and may get over the cold faster because you are forced to rest.

Talk to your PS before hand so they are aware.

I'm sorry that you're not feeling well - that stinks! :-( I think if you have a fever they will not do surgery - I would call your PS just to be sure and see what their policy is. FYI - my PS didn't take blood that morning, I had that done at my pre-op appt. They did take my temp. and other vital signs though. Get some rest and get better fast! :-) Good luck with your surgery!

i did my pre op 2 days before and the day before got a call that blood work showed signs of a infection starting or leaving. I had to do blood work the day of surgery. Had to be there a hr even early. Waited until 2 hours before what my surgery time would be and said that i was ok for surgery. I think that if you don't have a fever, you should be good. good luck. I was so stressed over the blood work, didn't have time to worry about surgery.

I got a sore throat 3 days before and was worried too, so I took lots of vitamin c and started my antibotics 2 days early, and I was fine come the day of surgary, but I agree if you have a fever I would call your PS.

I had the same concerns and pretty much same symptoms as you. My ps said that if I didn't have a fever then the surgery would still happen. I think that the anesthesiologist makes the final call. I had a sore throat and was congested. All turned out fine in the end.

I had a pretty bad kidney infection 4 days before my surgery and they went ahead. They said there was a very small chance the infection could go to the implants and cause a problem but since I was otherwise healthy and on strong anti-biotics they said very unlikely. They didnt do a blood test on the day but they did look in my throat, take my temperature and ask how I was feeling. If you have a fever they will not go ahead.

in aus..............

generally speaking having any of the following could be enough to cancel your surgery;
runny nose
or any other disease processes

just my base of knowledge and what anesthetists have told me with my previous ops.

I didn't have any blood drawn or my temperature taken the day of surgery. Like most other things, I think it depends on your PS.
