Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty in Nashville, Tennessee (TN)

Excess skin, fat, and loose muscles around your abdomen can be a difficult issue, and exercise and weight loss aren’t always enough. A tummy tuck, known as an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to correct these issues for a flat and firm midsection.

Benefits of a tummy tuck

A tummy tuck isn’t an alternative to a healthy diet and exercise, but it can help with persistent problems like loose skin, excess fat, and weakened or separated abdominal muscles. The procedure firms up your abdominal wall, slims your waistline, and eliminates apparent sagging skin around your belly and above your pubic area. Incisions are made along your bikini line so they are hidden by your bathing suit.

How tummy tuck surgery is performed

Abdominoplasty can be done under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Liposuction is commonly done during a tummy tuck to help remove fat deposits and more effectively slim your abdominal area.

During a full tummy tuck, your cosmetic surgeon will make an incision from hip to hip just above your pubic area.  Your abdominal muscles are sutured together to tighten them and create a flatter abdominal wall. Your excess belly skin at the bottom is trimmed, and a new hole for your navel is made. The incisions are then stitched.

A partial abdominoplasty, known as a mini tummy tuck, is a milder form of this surgery that just corrects the area under your navel, and your original navel is left in place. The incisions are smaller.

An extended tummy tuck can correct loose skin around your sides as well as your belly. The incision is much longer and goes past your hips and into your sides to allow removal of more excess skin.

Recovery after surgery

Recovery can take anywhere from two to 12 weeks depending on how much surgical work was done. Most people can return to their normal routine after one to two weeks. You’ll have temporary pain, soreness, swelling, and numbness that will subside with time. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help.

Costs

Tummy tuck costs vary depending on what type of surgery you select—mini, full, or extended—and whether or not liposuction is performed. Other factors that affect cost are your area, surgeon, and health care coverage. Health insurance providers usually do not cover abdominoplasty.

About Alton E. Ingram, MD

Dr. Alton E. Ingram is double board certified in Cosmetic Surgery and Facial Cosmetic Surgery. He has been practicing in Nashville since 2017 and joined the Toyos Clinic in January, 2021.

Dr. Ingram is a graduate of Yale University, where he received a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy, summa cum laude, as well as completing a premedical curriculum. While at Yale, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a National Merit Scholar. Dr. Ingram began his medical career at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he was a Southwestern Medical Foundation Scholar throughout medical school. He was one of three students in the country who “matched” straight into Plastic Surgery directly out of medical school that year. In 1995, he completed his Plastic Surgery residency at UT Southwestern, currently the number one ranked program in the United States.

Dr. Ingram continued his studies at the Rio de Janeiro clinic of Ivo Pitanguy, the father of modern cosmetic surgery and inventor of the Brazilian Butt Lift prior to studying reconstructive surgery at the University of Paris, Henri Mondor Hospital in France, where he worked under Laurent Lantieri, the surgeon who performed the world’s complete facial transplant. He then moved to Nashville to complete a fellowship in cosmetic surgery and breast reconstruction under Patrick Maxwell at Baptist Hospital, completed a fellowship in facial plastic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, and attained board certification in Plastic Surgery in 1999.

Dr. Ingram’s love for cosmetic surgery was shaped by his broad experience early in his career. He developed an appreciation for the importance not only of restoring normal form and function through reconstructive procedures, but also of enhancing every person’s innate beauty through cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Ingram is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and administers the Oral Board Exams every year. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, a member of the AACS’s Advocacy Committee, the Chairman of the ABCS’s Access to Safe Cosmetic Surgery Advocacy Committee, and a member of the ABCS’s Cosmetic Surgery Safety Initiative Committee. He is also a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Tennessee Medical Association (TMA).

Dr. Ingram limits his surgical practice, focusing only on cosmetic and plastic surgery of the face and body – facial plastic surgery, surgery of the breast (breast implant, breast lift, and breast reduction), and body contouring (liposuction, abdominoplasty, and Brazilian Butt Lift). Having trained with some of the world’s best surgeons, Dr. Ingram’s philosophy is to perform only those procedures which he knows he can perform as well as anyone in the world, as well as those which have the highest patient satisfaction and the lowest complication rates. As such, Dr. Ingram does not perform every cosmetic procedure and does not perform injections or provide skin care or other ancillary services. Other people are better at these procedures, and referrals to excellent practitioners are available.
