There are a number of alternative antibiotics with similar coverage spectrums but you need to talk to your surgeon.

The generic for Keflex is cephalexin which is usually widely available and is a very common antibiotic. Perhaps your physician wrote for the trade name version which may be a bit more difficult to obtain. Currently, I have heard of no shortage of the generic, cephalexin, in my area.

Yes, Keflex is interchangeable with something else, but it is up to your plastic surgeon to determine what he wants to prescribe.

Generally speaking, the antibiotic chosen for the perioperative period is designed for broad spectrum reach, and offers good coverage of skin flora (the typical offending agents in implant related infections). There are other options, however, I would recommend consulting with your board-certified plastic surgeon (ABPS) and find out what his/her desired second line agent is.
