Dr. Robert Howard

 

Dr. Howard's goal is to provide comprehensive, compassionate, and state-of-the-art plastic surgery and reconstructive care to all of my patients. He aims to provide patients an individualized approach focused on their needs and concerns, and support them throughout their reconstructive journey.

Dr. Robert Howard strives to provide the highest quality care in a comforting and supportive environment, helping our patients move beyond cancer, trauma, or deformity.

Services Offered

Working with the region's best oncologic breast surgeons, Dr. Howard offers women a full spectrum of state-of-the-art breast reconstruction options.

He provides an individualized approach to women with invasive and non-invasive breast cancer, or women with breast cancer risk, undergoing mastectomy or breast conserving therapies. 
Tissue (flap) based reconstructions he performs include DIEP, SIEA, SCAP, TRAM, LD, & LIFT flap procedures.  

He also offers pre-pectoral 
tissue expander and direct-to-implant breast reconstruction, and helps provide nipple sparing mastectomy options.

For women undergoing lumpectomy, Dr. Howard can provide oncoplastic procedures, such as oncoplastic breast reduction or mastopexy (breast lift) to
 improve oncologic and aesthetic outcomes in breast conservation therapies. Reconstructive surgery with the eye of a cosmetic surgeon.

Dr. Robert T. Howard is a plastic surgeon who specializes in breast reconstruction, plastic and reconstructive microsurgery, aesthetic/cosmetic plastic surgery, and wound healing. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Howard has extensive experience in trauma, cancer, and wound reconstruction, including reconstructive microsurgery, which he gained treating patients with complex military wounds while serving in the Medical Corps of the United States.  

He has over a decade long career using innovative techniques in restoring patients marred by cancer, trauma, or wounds. He strives to normalize form and function, and help patients move beyond their cancer, injuries, or wounds. 

Education

Dr. Howard received his undergraduate degree from the United States Naval Academy and his Doctor of Medicine from Bethesda’s Uniformed Services University. Following surgical internship, he studied hyperbaric medicine at the U.S. Navy’s Diving & Salvage Training Center. 

He completed General Surgery residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, and Plastic Surgery residency at Atlanta’s esteemed Emory University with focus on microsurgical breast reconstruction and limb salvage.

Prior to his retirement from military service, he served as the Chief of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and the Plastic Surgery Consultant for the White House.

With his vast experience in oncologic breast reconstruction, limb salvage and restoration, and regenerative medicine, Dr. Howard is excited to join the faculty at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Medstar Montgomery Medical Center.
