Hydrogel Breast Implants Information

PIP Hydrogel Breast Implants

PIP Hydrogel breast implants are made by PIP in France, and are supplied to the UK by Clover Leaf Products. They were first made available in 1994, after the silicone gel breast implant scare. PIP Hydrogel bre ast implants come in smooth and textured surfaces, as well as standard and high profile.  These implants are not available in the United States at the present time. Long term data on the toxicity of the gel is not available, therefore, an accurate evaluation cannot be made regarding the significance and/or reversal of any side effects of the gel, if any.

These implants consists of a silicone elastomer shell, with a hydroxypropyl cellulose hydrogel gel (water, sugar, and salt). In the event of a rupture, the filler reported as being easily metabolized by the body, and eliminated through the urine.

Hydrogels are said to feel very much like natural breast tissue, but cost $400-$1500 more than other implants do.

NovaGold PVP Hydrogel Breast Implants

NovaGold PVP Hydrogel breast implants are manufactured in Germany, and are supplied by Somatech Medical Ltd in the UK, and were first made available in 1996.

All PVP Hydrogel implants have a textured silicone elastomer shell. They are filled with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) hydrogel and guar gum gel. The gel provides an excellent lubrication, which in turn reduces the mechanical stress on the silicone shell. Due to the adhesive, sticky consistency of the gel filler, it provides a more natural feel when compared to other alternative types of implants.

P VP hydrogel was also used in MistiGold implants, which were manufactured by Bioplasty, Inc.

Basically, the same concerns regarding the PVP Hydrogel implants are the same as the concerns about the PIP Hydrogels, as well as the lack of data to assess risks arising from the implantation of guar gum.

These implants come in sizes ranging from 60cc to 500cc. Currently, there are surgeons in the British West Indies, China, and Germany using these implants.

Novamed also manufactures two other types of implants: NovaGold inflatable saline implants, and NovaGold pre-filled saline implants. At this time, there are no clinical studies taking place in the United States regarding any implant produced by Novamed.
