I had a breast augmentation four weeks ago and am experiencing numbness and tingling in my rt arm and back of my scapula. Specifically, a few days ago I noticed my thumb and pointer finger on my right hand were tingling. Then, I noticed a tingly feeling (like falling asleep) from my elbow down in my right arm. Today, it has moved to my right scapula. Is this normal and will it pass in time?
This is coming from your neck, probably secondary to surgical positioning or sleeping position post-op. Were you incubated during surgery?

Thank you for your question. Numbness and tingling are a sign of nerve paresthias, inflammation, or entrapment of nerves around your axilla (underarm). This feeling is not uncommon after subpectoral breast implant placement. It may be a sign of swelling or inflammation around a group of nerves called the brachial plexus. This feeling should resolve; however, I recommend you contact your plastic surgeon so you can be properly examined. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Congratulations on your recent surgery. Some tingling is normal during recovery, but because you are experiencing numbness, I would recommend that you call your surgeon or go in for evaluation to ensure that everything is fine. Best wishes.

Numbness and tingling can be normal, but it is best to call your surgeon and have him or her see you to evaluate what is going on and make sure that your healing is on track. Best of luck!

I sincerely doubt that this is caused by your breast augmentation The symptoms you describe sound more like carpal tunnel syndrome. Please speak to your plastic surgeon (who is usually a hand surgeon as well) and let him/her take a look at this. Thanks

Very unusual and hard to explain. Stretching the muscle or a blood pressure cuff can cause some discomfort, but this doesn't explain the scapula, unless you have shingles. Call your doctor.

It is important to see your surgeon for follow-up exams to discuss what you are feeling now. It may be normal or may resolve over time. But it is important to see your doctor and tell him what is going on, so that he can advise you.

Thank you for sharing. You should see your plastic surgeon to be examined and to discuss. For some patients, especially thin ones, arm position in the OR mildly stretches the nerves in the region, which occasionally leads to the sensations you describe. This usually returns to normal after some time. Talk with your plastic surgeon. Feel better and best wishes.

Numbness in the extremity after breast augmentation is usually temporary and related to positioning on the OR table with the arms abducted for a prolonged period of time. This can create stretch on the nerves and can cause transient numbness. Four weeks after surgery may be related to tension in the shoulders and chest secondary to the body getting used to the implants and you possibly sleeping in positions to protect them. Those symptoms typically do resolve, but may be indicative of a propensity for nerve compression issues (cubital tunnel) in the future.
