I was wondering if anyone has had patients who had lupus. I don't take tablets and I’m very healthy.
I have performed breast augmentations in lupus patients with the approval of their family physicians. The procedure will neither make the condition better nor worse, but it may improve the patient's quality of life.

No reason you shouldn't be able to get implants.

Yes

Yes, I have had patients with autoimmune diseases. There is a chance of remission. Ask your rheumatologist if it is advisable.

This may end up being a question for the anesthesiologist, as this specialist usually determines if any pre-surgical testing is needed. You may also ask your primary care physician if she or he would approve you for surgery.

Yes, we have, but it is important to understand that everyone is different. If you are in remission, there is a chance the procedure could stimulate your lupus. Speak to your primary care physician and/or the physician who has been managing your condition. If given clearance, you'll benefit from having an in-depth consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has dealt with clients who have conditions such as yours and who will take the time to ensure your lupus is under control before proceeding.

Thank you for your question.
Having Lupus does not automatically make you a bad candidate for surgery.
I have taken care of patients with Lupus.
Best to visit with an experienced plastic surgeon and also have documentation from your doctor that your Lupus is under control and that you are cleared to undergo elective surgery.
Best wishes.

Thank you for your question. I have several patients who have Lupus who have undergone breast augmentation with both saline and silicone gel implants. Each patient had preoperative medical clearance from their primary care physician or their rheumatologist to assure that their weren't any medical contraindications to surgery. They all healed well without any postoperative exacerbation of their lupus. You should talk to your rheumatologist, and have a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss the procedure in more detail.

Hello, fortunately having an auto-immune disease like Lupus does not preclude you from having silicone gel breast implants. Scientific studies have proven that there is no correlation or cause and effect relationship between the two. I have had many patients since 2006, the date of approval of silicone gel implants, that had auto-immune diseases like Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis that are doing well with their silicone gel breast implants.

There are no articles in the medical literature warning about the use of breast implants in patients with connective tissue disorder such as lupus. Over 300,000 women have been studied and the percentage of women who have lupus with breast implants is equal to the number of women who have lupus who never had implants. Back in the 90s, there was a "silicone scare" promoted by plaintiffs attorneys and other groups but no scientific data has ever supported their claims.

There has never been a link established between any systemic diseases and breast implants. All of the supposed connections were false/ myths. I have numerous patients with lupus, scleroderma, and rheumatoid arthritis who have had the surgery and are without issues.

Good morning!
In my opinion there is no reason you couldn't undergo breast augmentation!

Yes we have patients with lupus and for anyone with lupus or autoimmune diseases breast implants can be used if diseases under control and the rheumatologist clears the patient for surgery.
