I had silicone gel implants and a breast lift two weeks ago. I now have an infected seroma in my left breast. My surgeon prescribed antibiotics and has prepared me for the fact that the implant may need to be removed, heal for several months and then get put back in. Will the antibiotics work?
It sounds like your surgeon is doing everything right and telling you exactly what to expect.
Regarding your specific question "will the antibiotics work," the most direct answer is that they will work, meaning that they will make things better than without antibiotics, but just like your surgeon told you, even with the best antibiotic treatment it is possible that after you have healed for several months you might need another procedure to make things look great.
Good luck! Please let us know how your healing process goes!!

In the setting of periprosthetic fluid, antibiotic salvage is variable (in my experience 50% at best).
If your surgeon is certain that the seroma was infected (i.e. culture positive fluid), the likelihood of salvage with antibiotics is very low.
As always, discuss your concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

No, the implant needs to be removed ASAP if there is an infection.

The antibiotics will not work. After 2 weeks a capsule is formed and will have biofilm (contamination), necessitating excision of the capsule. Remove the implants, leave a drain for 2-4 wks, and wait at least 3 mos. before trying again.

I believe your doctor is correct, so just follow the protocol of antibiotics, then follow up carefully with your surgeon.

Usually, it will require that the implant be removed.

The first line of treatment of an infection would be an antibiotic. Sometimes the antibiotic will clear the infection. However, implants make it harder for the infection to be cured and the implant would have to be removed if the antibiotic fails to cure you. Also, be prepared for a possible hard contracture on the side of the infection. It is believed the scar tissue is related to possible infections.

Breast implant infection is rather unusual complication. It is important that proper identification of the bacteria is made, this way the chances of successful treatment with proper antibiotics is much greater. I would advise a consultation with an infectious disease doctor.

Only time will tell. Hopefully the infection is around the site of the sutures, and then you may be lucky. But if it doesn't resolve, then the implant will have to be removed.

Unfortunately, without knowing more details and examining you, there is no way to know if a particular treatment will work. Did your surgeon drain the seroma? Did he take a culture? Was there pus or just serous fluid? What are your symptoms now? I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you for your question. Without knowing your history or performing an examination, it will be difficult for online consultants to give you good advice.
Best to keep in close contact with your surgeon as he/she has your best interest in mind. Best wishes!

Sorry to hear about this. Antibiotics can help mild infections. Your PS is the best person as he/she knows your situation best. This online forum cannot make medical decisions for you. Best wishes.
