If you have older silicone implants, the new MemoryGel ones use more cohesive silicone that is now standard in the new generation.

You can not get devices that are expired catalog items from Mentor now but usually the catalog style numbers are the same but the gel is just more gummy bear-like. The warranties are from the date of placement as far as I know.

Implants do not have an expiration date in the literal sense. They are meant to last forever. However, the longer they are in place the more likely a patient will develop an issue which needs to be addressed. That being said, manufacturers typically recommend surveillance MRI (because a silicone gel implant looks the same whether intact or not) at 3 years post-op and at 2 year interval from that point forward.

With regards to your specific question(s), the Memory Gels have a more cohesive fill (less fluid). This imparts different qualities including lower incidence of rippling and a slightly stiffer feel which is exhibits less settling. There is also lower incidence of fill extrusion due to its more cohesive quality.

Both available options are safe and durable. The devices have an expiration date and generally devices past that date are not used. The warranty is valid from the date of implantation.
